About the Wall |
|
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall is a 247-foot long granite monument in Constitutional Gardens near the Lincoln Memorial. Constructed in the early 1980’s, this wall cost approximately $9,000,000, all of which was obtained through private donations. The land upon which the monument is located was provided for by legislations signed by President Jimmy Carter in 1980. While the wall contains over 58,000 names of U.S. service men and women, 8 of those individuals are women, 8 are from the Gallatin Valley and 264 are from the state of Montana. An aluminum replica of the original wall was constructed in 1984 for the purpose of temporary display throughout the country. All the names engraved on the actual wall in Washington D.C. are inscribed in black enamel on the replica. Since 1984, 3 Moving Walls have been offered for sale for permanent installation. While Pennsylvania and New Mexico are home to the first two walls, the third wall is being purchased by the Friends of the Sunset Hills Cemetery Veterans Memorial Fund.
